Winter sports team websites: a guide for every sport

What every high school winter sports team website needs before the season starts, with a setup guide for hockey, basketball, wrestling, swim, cheer and more.

Winter is the busiest stretch of the high school sports year. Hockey, basketball, wrestling, swim and dive, cheer, bowling, gymnastics and skiing all start within a few weeks of each other, and families with kids in more than one sport are trying to follow several schedules at once.

Every one of those teams needs the same thing from its website: one link that answers where the team plays, when to be there, and who is on the roster. The details change by sport, so we wrote a setup guide for each one.

What every winter team site needs

Whatever the sport, put these on the first screen before the first event:

  • the team's full name and level, and every school it draws from if it is a co-op
  • the season, for example 2026–27
  • the home venue's name and street address, with a link for directions
  • one team email address that someone reads

Then keep the schedule right. Winter weather moves games, meets and races more than any other season. Post every change on the site the same day, before or with the group text. A schedule that is wrong once teaches parents to check somewhere else.

Most high school athletes are minors. On every roster, keep to name, class year and jersey number where the sport uses one, and check your school's policy on student names and photos before posting either.

Finally, give each part of the site an owner who can edit it without a developer, and have someone check the whole site once a week in season.

A site you can keep current

OurTeamSports gives a team a website in its colors with schedule, roster, sponsor and event sections that coaches and parents update without a developer. To see a live team site, look at the H.H. Dow High Chargers hockey site, where it started.
